About the Festival
Get ready, Wallaceburg — the Sydenham Challenge Dragon Boat Festival is making waves like never before! What started as a small but mighty idea back in 2001 has exploded into one of the area’s most spirited, community‑powered events on the water.
It all began when dragon boat enthusiast Don Verhaeghe brought the sport to our community, inspiring the creation of the incredible Breast Buddies Dragon Boat Team. With passion, teamwork, and a whole lot of heart, they helped launch a festival that has been growing stronger every year.
From the early days of racing in borrowed “Tin Tubs” to today’s sleek, official 42‑foot dragon boats, this festival has evolved into a full‑throttle celebration of strength, unity, and pure adrenaline.
Thanks to the unwavering support of sponsors like Eternity’s Touch, Southwest Regional Credit Union, and The Canadian Legion Branch 18, we’ve kept registration fees the lowest in the region — making it easier than ever for teams to jump in and paddle hard.
Now, dozens of teams — from seasoned competitors to first‑time paddlers — hit the Sydenham River with one goal: paddle like champions and have an unforgettable time doing it. The energy is electric. The crowds are loud. The river comes alive.
Whether you're racing, cheering, or soaking in the atmosphere, this is your chance to be part of something big, bold, and beautifully community‑driven.
Grab your crew. Bring your spirit. Feel the roar of the drums.
We’ll see you on the historic Sydenham River in beautiful Wallaceburg, Ontario — where legends are made one stroke at a time
